Term 1 – Seeing things in a new light

This topic is about geometry in art and architecture and is presented using Powerpoint by Peter Brinkworth.

The five topics are:

  • 8th March – Symbolic Meaning of Numbers
  • 15th March – Geometry of Sacred Places and Spaces
  • 22nd March – Geometry in Church Art and Architecture
  • 29th March – Proportion in Art
  • 5th April – Perspective in Art

Peter Brinkworth was Associate Professor at Flinders University involved with teacher education and joint author of several texts to excite mathematics students. One of these publications, The Place of Mathematics, written with Paul Scott, invites students to “Take a trip to numerous cities around the world, and be enlightened by some of the mathematical points of interest to be found there.”

Peter brings this enthusiasm to his five-week presentation about geometry in art and architecture with visual illustrations.

2011: Term 3 – The Aspirin Age

We heard about a President, an Evangelist, a second hand furniture dealer (Al Brown) and an aviator!

Dr. Don Hopgood (see the photos left and above) joined us again for six weeks from July 28th until September 1st, 2011 with the topic “The Aspirin Age”.

Don says, “The ‘Aspirin Age’ is a reference to the period between the two world wars, particularly in the USA, when the Roaring Twenties was followed by the Depressed Thirties, the era when some, at least, needed an aspirin each morning to get them going after the night before.

A theme ran through all of this but it is one which was not revealed at the start but emerged over the weeks.”

Time 10.15am for coffee/tea and cake 10.30am – 11.30 am for the talk
Cost $5 – No enrolment necessary.

2011: Term 2 -“Mathematics can be fun” (Fun & History, Facts & Mystery)

This series was led by Peter Brinkworth, a retired Associate Professor, the series contained fun and history, facts and mystery. Seven weeks from the 5th of May 2011.
